Fayetteville State leads after First Round of CIAA Golf Championship
Petersburg, VA - (April 16, 2009)The Cardinal Club at Fort Lee, VA was a beautiful backdrop for the six golf teams vying for the 2009 CIAA Golf Championship title.
Fayetteville State University finished the first round ahead with a score of 290 distancing them from Virginia State University; the defending champions, who followed with a score of 309.
Saint Augustine's College rounded out the top three with a score of 335.
Elizabeth City State University shot 364; Virginia Union University shot 354 and Johnson C. Smith University finished with 364.
Kevin Lyles was the leader of the pack shooting 3 under par for the Broncos of FSU. Gregory Hunt shot 2 under par for VSU and Joel Lynn shot even par for the Broncos. Derek Score shot 74 and Jeremy Ringled finished at 75 for the Broncos to round out the top scorers of the day.
Tiffany Mason of VSU, the only female in the competition, played as an individual and shot a round of 104.
The second round of play for the championship title will tee off at 8:00 a.m. Friday morning at the Cardinal Club.
