FSU's Phillips named CIAA Football Coach of the Year

November 6, 2009

DURHAM - Kenny Phillips has Fayetteville State in its fourth CIAA Championship since 2002. The 10th year head coach has seven winning season since arriving at FSU in 2000.

This year, Phillips' team bounced back from an 0-2 start, won seven of its last eight games and went 5-0 on the road.

For his efforts, Phillips was named the CIAA's Coach of the Year at the conference's football luncheon on Friday.

"I was a little surprised," said Phillips. "I felt like, anytime that you get your team in the championship game you know there's a slim chance. I was a little shocked when they called the name. But when they said 'started off 0-2,' they kind of gave it away a little bit."

Phillips said the award is a reflection not just on himself, but also on his coaching staff.

"It's a great accomplishment," he said. "It goes to show you what we've done here as a coaching staff. This isn't just an award for Coach Phillips. This Coach of the Year also goes to my assistant coaches. They are a part of what we believe in and they are a major part of making us a good football program."

The Broncos will face Bowie State in the CIAA Championship game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Eight members of the FSU team were honored at the luncheon. Phillips said they were excited he received the award.

"They were overjoyed, because they think I'm kind of dry and I don't get excited about anything," he said. "I told them I don't get excited until football season is over. We've got one more game so, let's put the icing on the cake."
