KINDRED, CUMBERBATCH WIN AT CNU HOLIDAY INDOOR TRACK OPEN

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Both Joe Kindred and Jamal Cumberbatch of Saint Augustine's College opened the 2008-09 indoor track and field season with victories at the 2008 CNU Holiday Open hosted by Christopher Newport University on Saturday (Dec. 6).

Kindred, the 2008 Division II national high jump champion, won his event with a leap of 2.15 meters. His teammate Christopher Copeland finished second with a jump of 2.13 meters. Kindred was also third in the long jump with a leap of 7.50 meters.

Cumberbatch led a Falcon triple jump sweep with a leap of 14.95 meters. Brandon Quarles was second with a jump of 14.90 meters and Orlando Duffus was third with a jump of 14.88 meters.

Johnny Shuping, the 2008 CIAA men's cross country champion, placed second in the 800-meter run in 1:50.01, and Josh Scott of the Falcons was second in the 400-meter dash in 48.00 seconds. The Falcons also crossed the finish line second in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:13.00.

In the women's events, Jasmine Bethel of the Lady Falcons placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 11.99 meters, and Sharona Brown was fourth in the 800 run in 2:13.00.

There were 28 schools including Division I N.C. State University, N.C. Central University and East Carolina University and more than 750 athletes at the meet.
